Before Your Visit

What to do

Prepare group members for learning by asking them to list expectations. Reflect on what they know now: What do they hope to learn? How do they feel about wolves now (before their visit)? Do they have personal stories involving wolves or attitudes towards wolves? Have the group do an art project with wolves or make up a story/play involving wolves. Save these projects and re-examine them after the visit. Do any attitudes or ideas about wolves change?

Watch our wolves on-line via the Wolf Watch Cameras.

What to bring

If you plan on your group visit to involve field trips be sure to bring appropriate clothing for the weather. The weather in Ely is unpredictable and can change on a moments notice.

To check Ely, MN weather before your trip, visit The Weather Channel.

The saying is, "There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing." Please be sure your group is prepared for the weather. The best approach to staying warm in varying temperatures is "layering". Multiple layers of clothes allow you to take off layers as you heat up while active outside. Bringing along extra layers can also prepare you for sudden changes in weather. Wool or winter synthetic clothing will keep you dryer and warmer than cotton. Cotton clothing loses its warmth when wet or damp. A windproof outer layer will block the heat-robbing wind and keep you much warmer. It is best to avoid clothing that is too tight because it tends to cut off your circulation. With reduced blood flow, your extremities will be colder. This is especially important with boots.

Clothing that can be layered is recommended as it will allow for various temperatures. An example of layered clothing would be: a light-weight T-shirt, medium-weight long-sleeve shirt, a sweater, an outer jacket (ie: fleece, wool) and an outer shell that repels moisture (ie: rain-coat, wind-breaker), as well as long pants, possibly with thermal pants underneath. These items would be in addition to winter outerwear if you are visiting during the winter months.

It is not uncommon for the temperature to dip below zero from December through March. Please plan for the weather if your visit is during that time. If you are visiting during the warmer months, sunscreen and insect repellant are recommended and are not sold in the Wolf Den gift shop. Sandals or flip-flop type shoes are inappropriate for outdoor programs, please wear sturdy shoes such as hiking boots or tennis shoes.
