Invited Statements from Concerned Organizations

Editor's Note: In 1998 the International Wolf Center invited concerned organizations to submit a position statement on the status of wolves for distribution on its web site. A new request for current statements has gone out to these and other organizations and statements will be updated as they are received. (return to list of Organizations)

Timber Wolf Alliance

The Timber Wolf Alliance (TWA) is committed to the recovery and management of the timber wolf (Canis lupus nubilis) in its native habitats with special emphasis on Wisconsin and Michigan populations. TWA supports wolf management practices in the upper Great Lakes region which:

  • are based on sound science;

  • include strong public outreach and education efforts that dispel myths and promote factual, science-based information about timber wolves;

  • include considerable public input throughout their development;

  • support fair compensation for losses of livestock and other private properties caused by wolves;

  • include educating livestock owners about husbandry practices that can minimize their losses due to wolf depredation;

  • include non-lethal means of wolf control and translocation, and humane methods of euthanasia; and

  • supports legislation that restricts wolf/dog hybrid ownership.
