In celebration of the addition of two new wolf
pups to our Exhibit Pack in May of 2008, the International Wolf Center is holding an
international essay contest.
Enter for a chance for your class to visit the International Wolf Center in
Ely, Minnesota USA without setting foot outside your own classroom. Win a distance
learning program featuring the Center's ambassador wolves via two-way videoconferencing.
Teach your students about wolves, their relationship to wild lands, and the
human role in their future. Gain familiarity with the wolves, and a deeper
understanding of their behavior and conservation.
Competition is open to classrooms with students in two age categories: ages 10-14
and ages 15-18.
Student must answer the question within their correct age category to be eligible
(ages 10-14 years and ages 15-18 years).
ONE entry PER classroom. Teacher will determine which is the best essay to submit
on behalf of the class.
Completed official Worldwide Wolves Essay Contest entry form, with the required
information must accompany the essay. The online entry form will be available June 1st.
Submission dates begin on Sunday, June 1, 2008 and end on Friday, October 25,
2008 at the conclusion of Wolf Awareness Week in the USA. Entries received after
October 25 will NOT be eligible.
Essays must be accompanied by a high resolution (300 dpi) digital photograph of
the class and student author.
All entries and photos become the property of the International Wolf Center and
may be published in any format. All rights reserved. Photos and essays will NOT
be returned.
Essay must be submitted in accordance with the eligibility requirements and format
guidelines or it will be disqualified.
Entries must be written in English, typed and double spaced. No more than 400
words in length for ages 10-14 and no more than 600 words in length for ages 15-18.
Entry in your own language along with an English version is encouraged.
The font size must be a minimum of 12 pt and no larger than 14 pt.
Only essays using Times New Roman, Helvetica or Arial fonts will be accepted.
Left and Right Margins must be 1.25 inches and Top and Bottom margins 1 inch.
Entries must be typed in Microsoft Word or saved as a Microsoft Word document.
Essay must have proper grammar, spelling and punctuation, with no errors.
Essay must have an organized structure - an introduction, a body and a conclusion.
Complete the following essay question(s) according to age group:
Classroom with students 10-14 years of age - 400 words or less
- Observe the Center's wolf pups via the Wolf
Watch Pup Cam, or in-person and describe their specific different behavior from
domestic dogs.
Classroom with students 15-18 years of age - 600 words or less - Complete BOTH
questions
- Observe the Center's wolf pups via the Wolf
Watch Pup Cam, or in-person and describe their specific different behavior from
domestic dogs.
- Identify two major challenges to wolf recovery in your country/state/province
and suggest solutions for each one.
Winners will be notified by phone or email no later than 12/15/2008.
ONE first prize winner in EACH age category will be chosen. Winners will
receive a free
distance learning program for the class, one year free membership to
the International Wolf Center for the classroom and an International Wolf Center hat
and other prizes for each student.
Membership includes a subscription to the Center's quarterly magazine,
International Wolf, free entrance to the International Wolf Center interpretive center in Ely, MN,
discounts on merchandise from the Wolf Den Store
and catalog, invitations and priority registration for Center programs, and a $25
discount on both weekend and weeklong adventure programs.
The classroom and student author will see their work published in International
Wolf magazine and online at www.wolf.org.
The following are requirements for a distance learning program:
- ISDN (H.320), IP (H.323) or E164 connection capability
- Point-to-point connections only at this time
- Recording of programs not permitted
- Maximum 40 students per program
If you do not have the technology or ability to access the technology to receive
a distance learning program, an alternative comparable educational first prize will
be awarded.
TWO second prize winners from EACH category will be chosen. Winners receive
a one year free membership to the International Wolf Center for their classroom
(description of benefits above), an interactive wolf ethogram CD (study, identify and
understand wolves with descriptions and images of wolf behavior) wolf bookmarks,
International Wolf Center pens, stickers and other prizes for each student.
Judges will be International Wolf Center wolf experts. The decisions of the judges
are final.
