Total number of wolves in Canada is estimated at 50,000 to 60,000, and the species still occupies roughly 86% of its historical range. Population estimates from a number of jurisdictions were calculated on the basis of the modal density of one wolf per 110 sq. km. A questionnaire was circulated to all provincial and territorial jurisdiction in 1998 to see if there are major shifts in populations and to identify potential problem areas. In addition, a survey was conducted with all jurisdictions to summarize current areas in the country were wolves receive either full or partial protection. Three specific problem areas identified from these surveys were the taxonomic status of the Alqonquin wolves, the numerical status of High Arctic wolves and the potential vulnerability of Tundra wolves to hunting on snowmobiles. All these items will be discussed in the presentation of this paper.
