The wolf in Portugal is threatened with extinction, and its
range still faces regression, especially in the southern marginal
part. In this region, the wolf population is now fragmented,
having lost its continuity both with the northern Portuguese
population and with the Spanish one. In this presentation, the
last 25 years of wolf studies and conservation efforts in Portugal
are analyzed, and new directions concerning wolf recovery and
human-wolf interactions in the next millenium are discussed.
