One of the most difficult journeys a person can make is to cross Antarctica. In 1941, Ernest Shackleton set out to do that and was unsuccessful. But in 1990, Will Steger was able to accomplish that feat. Steger will be hosting the Nature Nights program on Monday, August 18 and will discuss both his and Shackleton's adventures. This event begins at 7PM and will be held at the International Wolf Center. It is free and open to the public.
Shackleton wrote, "to cross the continent from sea to sea is the last great Polar journey that can be made." His grand journey turned into one in need of a grand rescue when his boat was caught in the ice and crushed. Steger will discuss Shackleton's attempt and his own successful venture across the frigid arctic.
Nature Nights is a series of speakers held every Monday evening. It is sponsored by the International Wolf Center, North American Bear Center, Listening Point Foundation, Dorothy Molter Museum, Vermilion Community College, US Forest Service and Boundary Waters Wilderness Program in joint partnership with the Boundary Waters Ecology Center.
