Ely International Wolf Center's Administrator Leaving

September 18, 2003

Gretchen Diessner, the International Wolf Center's assistant director for education, will leave her Ely post in December to move to southwestern Florida and pursue a new opportunity.

"This has been a dream job," said Diessner. "The Center is part of me now, and I plan to come back to Ely every summer."

Diessner joined the Ely staff in May, 2001, and has managed the Ely facility during a period of growth which saw the addition of a children's exhibit, refurbished auditorium, new garage and, for the resident wolves, a pond, waterfall and retirement enclosure.

During this time the Center's education program extended its focus in northeastern Minnesota and the Twin Cities and is reaching out to a national level. The Center hosted a Nature Night Series which brought hundreds of visitors to the Center to hear about wolves and programs by other area environmental and non-profit organizations.

"It's been a privilege to know the incredibly hard working group of people who run the education, office, store and wolf care aspects the Center in Ely," Diessner said. "I have loved making this area my home. Ely seems to grow and change, but still holds onto its unique nature. Maybe the independent spirit of the wilderness has flavored the people who live here."

"Gretchen's cheerful can-do attitude, her gift of organization and her ability to manage change have been tremendous gifts to the Center." said Executive Director Walter Medwid. "She has been so important to the Center's growth and vitality."

Recruitment for the position of assistant director of education will begin next week, and candidates can apply by sending a resume and cover letter to the International Wolf Center/ADE Search, 3300 Bass Lake Rd. #202, Minneapolis, MN 55429.
