Ely, Minn. February 7, 2005
The International Wolf Center will offer a three-day intensive field seminar on wolf predation based at its interpretive center in Ely, Minnesota. The seminar, "Wolf Predation: Hunting Behavior and Predator-Prey Systems," will be held March 11 - 13, 2005.
The seminar will offer an in-depth look at predatory strategies used by wolf packs and observed by research biologists. Led by Lori Schmidt, wolf curator of the International Wolf Center and Instructor of Natural Resources at Vermilion Community College, participants will enjoy educational discovery, outdoor adventure and comfortable accommodations in the heart of wolf country.
Highlights of the seminar include an aerial telemetry flight to track wild wolves, analysis of scat to determine prey consumption and possible field examination of a predation site. Participants will also observe the Center's ambassador wolves weekly feeding program, "What's for Dinner?" These field trips will complement classroom sessions that will explore research on wolf predation in northern Minnesota, Yellowstone, and Ellesmere Island.
The cost of the seminar is $325, which includes meals and lodging at Timber Wolf Lodge, adjacent to the Perch Lake Wolf Territory.
The seminar is part of a four-part series offered by the International Wolf Center. Future seminars include:
- Captive Wolf Management, held in partnership with the Wildlife Science Center, May 4 - 7, 2005
- Wolf Ethology: The Study of Wolf Behavior, June 26 - July 2, 2005
Canine Cousins, August 9 - 11, 2005
- Academic credit is available for most seminars. For more information on this series, visit www.wolf.org. To register, call 1-800-ELY-WOLF (1-800-359-9653), ext 25.
