Adventure Seeking Travelers Explore The Natural World Of Wolves With The International Wolf Center's, Wolf Country Learning Vacations in Ely, Minnesota, Summer 2005

New programs for adults and families allow people of all ages to experience the fascinating world of the wolf in its natural habitat.

April 24, 2005

This summer, the International Wolf Center, in Ely Minnesota, is offering a series of six, unique, wolf-focused learning adventures called Wolf Country Learning Adventures. The two to four day programs combine educational discovery, outdoor adventure, excellent meals and comfortable accommodations at the edge of the world famous Boundary Waters in Ely, Minnesota.

There are four types of Learning Adventures to choose from, some designed for families and others for adults only. During the day, participants enjoy first-hand wolf experiences such as hiking to an abandoned wolf den, radio tracking, howling to wild wolves, and special behind-the-scenes experiences with the Center's ambassador wolves. At night, visitors return to comfortable lakeside lodging and first-rate meals.

New for 2005 is Wolf Family Rendezvous, a wolf adventure designed just for families. The program includes a howling expedition, a wolf tracking hike, observing our resident wolves, and a campfire complete with s'mores and wolf tales. Wolf Family Rendezvous will be offered July 23-26 and August 11-14, 2005. Cost is $295 for adults, $250 for children.

Also new is Wild about Wolves and Bears!, a unique opportunity to meet Minnesota's wolves and bears up close! At the Vince Shute Sanctuary, participants will observe wild black bears eating and interacting. In Ely, they will study the International Wolf Center's ambassador wolves, howl to wild wolves, and explore an abandoned wolf den. Wild about Wolves and Bears will be offered June 17-19 and July 8-10, 2005. Cost is $295.

Most Learning Adventures begin and end in Ely, Minnesota and include expert instruction, double occupancy lodging, and all meals. One program, Summer with the Pack, includes roundtrip ground transportation to Ely from Minneapolis. For a complete listing of programs, visit www.wolf.org. Prices listed are for non-members. Members of the International Wolf Center receive a $25 discount on all programs. Participants must be 16 years old to join adult programs, and children must be five years old to participate in the family programs.

Other Summer 2005 Learning Adventures include:

  • Summer with the Pack, June 23-26, 2005; July 14-16, 2005. Highlights include a hike to an abandoned wolf den, howling to local wolf packs, canoeing on White Iron Lake, and a visit with our ambassador wolves. This program includes RT transportation from the Twin Cities. Cost is $375.
  • Canine Cousins, August 9-11,2005. There's a wolf in your dog! It's true, dogs are so closely related to their wolf ancestors that many classic dog behaviors- face licking, rolling over, howling, and shaking toys- have their origins in the evolutionary adaptation of wild wolves. We will explore this relationship in the classroom by examining breed-specific dog behaviors and observing the behavior of our ambassador wolves. $250
