International Wolf Center Executive Director Walter Medwid and world-renowned Wolf Biologist and Center founder Dr. L David Mech left the Minneapolis Airport on July 6th carrying high hopes of spotting and studying arctic wolves that eluded them on their last trip to Ellesmere together in 2001. Those hopes became reality when the two found and studied a pack of six adult wolves and three pups before a return trip home on July 24th.
Mech and Medwid were able to observe closely the interactions of these white canines because the wolves have not developed the same amount of fear in humans wolves in other parts of the world have. This is due to the fact they are hundreds of miles north of the nearest people who could hunt or trap them. And is one reason why Mech goes on annual trips to Ellesmere to study the wolves and their prey, musk-oxen and arctic hares.
The International Wolf Center is a not-for-profit organization with a flagship facility in Ely, MN and an Administrative and Outreach Office in Plymouth, MN, where Medwid is located. Dr Mech, with the U. S. Geological Survey and the University of Minnesota, studies wolves around the world but resides in St Paul, MN.
