The International Wolf Center is celebrating National Wolf Awareness Week, October
17 - 23, with a variety of events.
On Tuesday, October 19, the Center will host its inaugural 5K Nordic Walk for Wolves
fundraising event starting at 5:30 p.m. in Plymouth, Minnesota. Center Board Member
and Nordic Walking Queen Linda Lemke will demonstrate how to Nordic walk around
beautiful French Regional Park. All proceeds will go to support the Center's mission to
teach the world about wolves. Go to www.wolf.org for more information and to sign-up.
The Center is teaming up with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Jefferson Elementary
School in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Wednesday, October 20 to highlight the Center's
Minnesota WolfLink project and the Timberwolves' "New Season, New Beginnings" and
"Reading Time Out" programs.
- Minnesota WolfLink is a three-year project funded by Minnesota's Environment
and Natural Resources Trust Fund that provides 100 FREE, interactive, videoconferencing
programs to educate students in real-time who will virtually visit the Center from
their classrooms around the state.
- The Minnesota Timberwolves' "New Season, New Beginnings" reflects the excitement
and opportunity a new NBA season brings not only to basketball enthusiast, but
also the communities in which they play. It means highlighting those who work hard
to create new opportunities for Minnesota's youth: creating renewed spaces, energy
and attitudes for learning and community development.
Finally, guests to the Center's educational facility in Ely will be treated to a
FREE event called "Howl-O-Ween" from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 23 from
3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Event activities will include:
- Haunted exhibit
- Games
- Inside-out dissection
- Costume contest
- Treats
- Kid's Halloween movies
The Center is encouraging guests to bring in canned goods to receive $1 off admission
to the wolf-feeding program called What's For Dinner? starting at 6:30 p.m. on October
23. The Center will donate all canned goods to the local Ely Food Shelf.
"We are excited to celebrate National Wolf Awareness Week through these events and
we'd like to thank the groups who worked with us to make them a reality," said Mary
Ortiz, executive director of the Center. "We hope to raise the visibility of our programs
that reach students and groups around the world as well as our guests who visit the
ambassador wolves and flagship facility in person and virtually through our Web site."
