International Wolf Center Celebrates National Wolf Awareness Week

October 13, 2010

The International Wolf Center is celebrating National Wolf Awareness Week, October 17 - 23, with a variety of events.

On Tuesday, October 19, the Center will host its inaugural 5K Nordic Walk for Wolves fundraising event starting at 5:30 p.m. in Plymouth, Minnesota. Center Board Member and Nordic Walking Queen Linda Lemke will demonstrate how to Nordic walk around beautiful French Regional Park. All proceeds will go to support the Center's mission to teach the world about wolves. Go to www.wolf.org for more information and to sign-up.

The Center is teaming up with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Jefferson Elementary School in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Wednesday, October 20 to highlight the Center's Minnesota WolfLink project and the Timberwolves' "New Season, New Beginnings" and "Reading Time Out" programs.

  • Minnesota WolfLink is a three-year project funded by Minnesota's Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund that provides 100 FREE, interactive, videoconferencing programs to educate students in real-time who will virtually visit the Center from their classrooms around the state.
  • The Minnesota Timberwolves' "New Season, New Beginnings" reflects the excitement and opportunity a new NBA season brings not only to basketball enthusiast, but also the communities in which they play. It means highlighting those who work hard to create new opportunities for Minnesota's youth: creating renewed spaces, energy and attitudes for learning and community development.

Finally, guests to the Center's educational facility in Ely will be treated to a FREE event called "Howl-O-Ween" from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 23 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Event activities will include:

  • Haunted exhibit
  • Games
  • Inside-out dissection
  • Costume contest
  • Treats
  • Kid's Halloween movies

The Center is encouraging guests to bring in canned goods to receive $1 off admission to the wolf-feeding program called What's For Dinner? starting at 6:30 p.m. on October 23. The Center will donate all canned goods to the local Ely Food Shelf. "We are excited to celebrate National Wolf Awareness Week through these events and we'd like to thank the groups who worked with us to make them a reality," said Mary Ortiz, executive director of the Center. "We hope to raise the visibility of our programs that reach students and groups around the world as well as our guests who visit the ambassador wolves and flagship facility in person and virtually through our Web site."
