Idaho's request to kill wolves denied by Jessica Edberg International Wolf Center
Officials in Idaho may not remove wolves in the Clearwater Region, according to a decision made by federal officials. Earlier this year, the Idaho Fish and Game Department (IDFG) proposed a controversial wolf cull in the Lolo elk management zone in the Clearwater Region of north-central Idaho. The agency requested permission to kill up to 75 percent of that region's wolf population as a means to increase elk numbers.
According to the IDFG, the Lolo elk population has been declining for some time due in part to wolf predation on elk cows. They The IDFG estimates that removal of 75 percent of the 47 to 69 wolves in the Lolo elk management zone over five years would increase elk production and survival. Federal officials disagreed and stated that although wolves may play a role in elk population decline, they cannot draw the same conclusions as the IDFG, based on the data submitted.
